Director, Child Advocacy Clinic


Professor Iris Sunshine is the director of the law school’s Child Advocacy Clinic, which focuses on the representation of the best interests of children as lawyer advocate, lawyer guardian ad litem and non-lawyer guardian ad litem. She is also the executive director of the Children’s Law Center of Central North Carolina. The Children’s Law Center provides children with quality legal advocacy focusing on domestic violence, high conflict custody and ensuring access to education.

Professor Sunshine began her legal career in 1989 as an Assistant District Attorney for the 21st Prosecutorial District. She tried numerous felony cases and focused on the prosecution of adult sex offenders and the protection of children until 1997. Professor Sunshine earned her J.D. from Wake Forest University School of Law in 1989. After graduating from Cornell University with a bachelor's of science degree in Industrial and Labor Relations, she worked as a lobbyist for the International Ladies’ Garment Workers’ Union in Washington, D.C.
