Domestic Violence Advocacy Center

Do you wish you could afford to hire a lawyer? Maybe you can. Thanks to the United Way, there is a program that provides free legal representation to victims of domestic violence who can’t afford to hire a lawyer. Wake Forest University School of Law participates with the Domestic Violence Advocacy Center at the Legal Aid office to provide student volunteers to help you in your fight against domestic violence.

Family violence is one of the most frequent and unreported crimes in our country and state. The laws that protect spouses from abuse also apply to people who have a familial relationship with one another, including people of the opposite sex who have child in common whether or not they live together. Children are also protected against abuse from parents, the live-in partners of parents, or other individuals who act as parents. Actual physical violence is not the only actionable offense; serious threats of injury that cause actual fear of bodily injury are also considered domestic violence offenses.
